I’m Dr Sharon Blackie – award-winning writer, psychologist and mythologist. My books, courses, lectures and workshops are focused on the development of the mythic imagination, and on the relevance of myths, fairy tales and folk traditions to the personal, cultural and environmental problems we face today. As well as writing five books of fiction and nonfiction, including the bestselling If Women Rose Rooted, my writing has appeared in anthologies, collections and in several international media outlets – among them the Guardian, the Irish Times, and the Scotsman. My books have been translated into several languages, and I’ve been interviewed by the BBC, US public radio and other broadcasters on my areas of expertise. I’ve also taught and lectured at several academic institutions, Jungian organisations, retreat centres and cultural festivals around the world. You might be wondering why I ask for payment for access to my writing, rather than just publishing it on a free blog. Well, as a writer, words are my work. Royalties from my books and from commissioned articles form the major part of my income. I put a lot of words out into the world for free (on social media, in my newsletters, in interviews and podcasts) but writers, of course, need to earn a living from exercising their skills, just as other artists and creators do. My commitment to those of you who choose to become supporters of my work is to ensure that you receive something of value in return. Not just carefully crafted words, but ideas and inspiration for life. Because if I’m passionate about any one thing, I’m passionate about transformation. It’s only by transforming ourselves that we can hope to transform the world. And if we want to change the dominant, life-denying cultural mythology which is failing us and failing the planet, we also need to begin by transforming the myths that each one of us chooses to live by. We need to discover our personal calling, to uncover the unique gift that we each bring to the world at this time – and to understand our own individual mythopoetic journey through this life. That’s the foundation for all of my work.
