I’ve been asked many times about the books which have inspired me most, and contributed to the process of my awakening. As I began to browse through my bookshelves to see which books have lasted – which have travelled all around the world with me, being packed up and unpacked time and time again because I couldn’t bear to let go of them – it became clear that I was going to have to offer two lists: one for nonfiction, and the other for fiction. So here is the first, and the other to follow in the next post. They’re ordered according to the time in my life when I read them, earliest first.
I have a few of these. I agree about Anais Nin, who I first encountered aged 18 in my first year at Uni in 1978, and I found her extraordinary. I’ve never managed to get on with Women Who Run With The Wolves. I’ve bought and handed on the book 3 times. I now have a fourth copy, unopened, on my bookshelf. I feel I SHOULD love it, SHOULD read it, SHOULD have it on my bookshelf, yet it has never touched my heart. The book I would add to your list is Belonging by Toko-Pa Turner, every paragraph is a revelation steeped in wisdom, plus If Women Rose Rooted!
