Absolutely love your posts Sharon. They are so thoughtful and really help me feel connected to nature, magic, and myth. They always get my creative and inspirational neurons firing. I personally love summer, but I empathise with feeling more inward looking and creatively productive when the draw of the outdoors isn't so strong.
So many things for me to digest here Sharon. Fairytales are absolutely one of the fondest memories of my childhood. I still have the most beautiful book of poems and illustrations that captivated my imagination and can I say made me feel safe. As though I already knew that where there was magic, there was more to me. Thank you. 🙏💫🧚♀️
I really sympathise with your feelings about summer. I was an August baby and I'm always eager to embrace August as an autumn month, as the Anglo-Saxons did. Your new home sounds wonderful.
And I've been waiting eagerly for the paperback release of Hagitude!
Yes, your words really resonated with me too, and the expression "Summer's shouting" made me smile for that is just how I see it. It's just all too full on for me, especially down on the allotment there is a feeling of panic and never actually being able to keep up with it all and then, I am so relieved once the solstice comes and I feel I can relax and allow things to start going quietly brown.
I'm with you, Sharon. It seems with every year I love fall and winter more and more. Especially since I moved to New Hampshire (US) where we have something aptly called "Bug Season" from mid May until mid August. It's no joke. Between the ticks and biting flies it's pretty unbearable.. I'm blessed to live on a grassy knoll surrounded by the woods on three sides and an Audubon Preserve across the road. It's breathtakingly beautiful here. But, what do I expect? Right now, the swarming deer flies are so bad I need to completely cover myself, and I mean completely, or I'll be covered in nasty bites. As one of the farmers said to me today "It would be worse if there were no insects." I know this is true but...
Also, we have had 25 out of 30 days of rain in June. I love a good rainy day but it's been pretty crazy.
Your new house sounds amazing! Thx for letting me vent! :)
Having lived in the lands of the gear Highland midge for 20 years until now, i quite understand. Wishing you fortitude to get to the end days of autumn!
Lesley, I have a feeling our black flies and no-see-um are like your midges. We also have horseflies and deer flies which are BRUTAL. Yes, we pray for wind, too! It's no joke, right? Good luck this summer!
The ticks have been INSANE this year, although they seem to (maybe) have crawled back in their hidey holes. I haven't seem one in two days. Maybe they don't like the rain. It's the only time I wish I didn't live alone so I could scream "Get this off of meeeee!!!" :)
My birthday is on June 28th and I felt like you were speaking to my soul with your words. I too miss the quiet cool temps and solitude of winter. I have been traveling a lot and always trying to find a shady forest when I can to feed my soul. Thanks for your writing. I enjoy it so much, as well as your books. From Sedona, AZ. with love.
It’s always a pleasure to read your monthly newsletters, Sharon!
And I’m there with you: I am grateful we have summer with its bounty and outward beauty but nothing soothes my soul like a stroll in a crisp autumnal forest or a quiet candle-lit morning in winter. Though the mid-summer storms are gorgeous in my area.
I wouldn’t want to live in a tropical location. Give me the seasons to witness!

I have heard tales of the Highland midge!

An “infestation of plumbers”!! 😂 Thank you for the beautiful thoughts and recommendations and especially the poem. Lovely reminder.
I just finished Maggie Smith’s memoir myself. It held me. Poignant and highly readable! ❤️

Despite being a July baby, I have also struggled with Summer. I've learnt to accept some aspects of it, but is not my natural habitat!
